Team building for conflict at work When tension in the team is getting in the way of the work
Not every disagreement is a problem. But when people avoid each other, take sides or stop speaking up, the work suffers. A facilitated programme gives the team a safer way to work through it.
Usually solved with The Communication Programme
Signs you will recognise
- Small disagreements turn personal
- People go to the manager about each other instead of talking directly
- Cliques or 'us and them' groups have formed
- Quiet people have stopped giving their opinion
- Meetings are tense, or everyone avoids the real issue
Why it happens
Most workplace conflict grows out of pressure and misunderstanding rather than bad people: unclear roles, competing targets, or a change that left some people feeling unheard. Left alone, it hardens into positions.
A shared challenge changes the setting. People have to rely on each other to succeed and see each other at their best. The debrief then opens a conversation about how the team works, led by a neutral facilitator rather than the manager.
How we tackle it
Usually with The Communication Programme, adjusted to your team after the planning call.
Planning call
A confidential conversation with you about what is going on, so we can design the day without putting anyone on the spot.
Mixed-team challenges
We mix people who don't usually work together into teams, on challenges like Build a Bridge where success depends on listening to each other.
Facilitated debrief
We keep the conversation on how the team works, not on individuals. People agree what they need from each other from here on.
Written summary
The agreed ways of working, in writing, so they can be referred back to.
What changes afterwards
- People who have worked well together, often for the first time in a while
- An agreed set of ways of working, written down
- A clearer view for managers of what is behind the tension
What a team day can't fix
Team building is not mediation, and it isn't the right tool for a formal grievance, harassment or a disciplinary matter. Those need HR and sometimes a professional mediator. If that is what is going on, we will tell you on the planning call rather than sell you a programme.
Other problems we help with
Poor communication
Messages get lost, people assume instead of asking, and hand-overs keep breaking.
